UNDER GOD

“ I tremble for my country when I reflect that GOD is just.”

These are the ominous words of Thomas Jefferson as he considered the consequences of slavery which he called a “Crime Against Humanity.” The bloody and cruel devastation of the Civil War later confirmed Jefferson’s worst fears: that a nation ultimately reaps what it sows. When we demean and ridicule the descendants of those whom our forefathers murdered, why do we not tremble as Jefferson did? Do we actually believe that GOD, whom our coins proclaim we trust, is no longer just?

God says, "For your evil
You must surely repent
For if you do not
You are doomed and hell-bent.

"But we are the United States.
Under God, "We say.
But God calls us Hypocrites
And for our sins we must pay.

"How are we hypocrites?"
Is our defensive reply.
"You have caused multitudes
Of Indians to suffer and die."

"Only our forefathers "
Were involved in that crime.
All Native Americans
Are treated well in our time."

"Your own words are a witness
Of your hardness of heart.
Though you claim to be wise,
You are not very smart."

"Today in your capital
Your leaders' arrogance does stink.
But their hearts are so hardened
They do not see the link."

"For their national mascot
They claim the 'Redskin.'
In the eyes of Holy God
This is grievous sin."

"But is it not harmless,
A Redskin for a mascot?"
"No! It is obscene;
A lie you have bought."

"Instead of mocking,
For forgiveness you should plead.
But you claim to be pure
And to have no need."

"These are our leaders,
Not the man in the street.
It is only our leaders
Who deserve God's heat."

"Racism in common people
Does not exist, you say.
What happened in a Seattle school
On a late November day?"

'Replace the Indian as your mascot,'
The Native Americans pleaded.
Unanimously the Alum group voted
To deny them the hope they needed."

"Did they not deserves a gesture
Whose land you treacherously stole?
But you callously refused
To help them feel whole."

It is our entire nation
That surely must repent.
For if we do not
We are doomed and hell-bent.
